Swn-Y-Mor

Port Henderson, Gairloch

Stunning sea views, lochs, mountains, the Hebrides and more... all at your fingertips
About the Location

Swn-Y-Mor is in the small village of Port Henderson near Gairloch in the beautifully untamed Scottish Highlands. No matter what time of the year, the Highlands are dramatically breath-taking.

Fabulous setting on a dead-end lane on a headland, large fenced garden, fantastic views.  Close to Gairloch which has shops, petrol, bank, doctor & all other necessities.  Two good local pubs, many restaurants.  Great walking & cycling territory.  Easy reach of beaches, mountains, Inverewe gardens & other attractions.

There are beautiful sandy beaches at Opinan, which you can walk to round the cliff path (3 miles by road), Red Point (5 miles) and Gairloch (about 8 miles), and many more further afield.  A notebook in the house lists the best beaches and other places to visit and there are also books with suggested walks, maps etc.  The local rocky shore is sometimes visited by seals, and the sound of the sea is constant.

About the Cottage

Swn-y-Mor (Welsh for 'Sound of the Sea', the Gaelic version is 'Ceol-na-Mara') is a converted and extended detached croft house with three double and one single bedrooms (one downstairs), and plenty of room for extra beds (there are some fold-up beds and plenty of bedding).  The dining room only seats 6, however, 8 at a squeeze. Pets are welcome and at no extra cost.

There is a shower room downstairs and a bathroom upstairs, both with basin & WC, sitting room with open fireplace, den with TV and board games, dining room and fully equipped kitchen and utility room, including washing machine and dishwasher.  There is also a large sunny porch.

Outside is about half an acre of garden, which is fenced effectively against small children, but the fencing does not keep the red deer out nor athletic dogs in!  The garden is a work in progress and currently is mostly lawned, though there are a few trees and shrubs including a some small apple trees.  It is very sunny and usually breezy, which is beneficial on the midge front!  There is garden furniture and a barbecue.

The best views from the house and garden are over Loch Gairloch to the north and towards the mountains to the east.  A very short amble up the lane brings you to the end of the road and views of Skye and the Outer Hebrides.  Footpaths lead from here out onto the headland and to dramatic Carr Point.

Travel and Transport

Please see below a map of the location of Porthenderson and information on getting there. We're more than happy to give you help and advice with your travel choices.

By air: If you live quite far south, to save on journey-time, we recommend flying to Inverness (just over an hour's flight), hiring a car and driving straight from the airport (about an hour and a half's drive). There are regular and reasonably-priced flights to Inverness from Bristol and London. There are plenty of car hire options there and it's about an hour and-a-half drive from the airport to Swn-Y-Mor.

By car: Driving from Wales or the south of England to Porthenderson, the journey time is roughly a total of around ten hours. Good stop-offs include Perth, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling amongst others, depending on your route (we can advise on this, too!).

By rail:  A train will get you as far as Achnasheen (by way of Iverness), so if you're a keen cyclist, this could be an option. There are good rail links to Inverness or Mallaig. Train tickets are worth booking in advance.
